Tweet Tweet!

The 1 week of twitter assignment was a very unique one. i think it is important that students get involved in social networks, and think it was a great idea for an assignment.
i had already been a twitter user for a short time before the assignment, but did not tweet very often. i mainly used it to follow some celebrities, namely Kanye West. Kanye has a reputation for posting very funny and strange tweets. i am also i big fan of his music, so i am able to stay posted on his upcoming album by following him on twitter.
i am not much of a tweeter, but sometimes i like to post things i think are interesting or funny, or just things that are going on in my life. i am not an idiot, so i do not post absolutely everything i do on facebook or on twitter. i am pretty selective about what i let get posted on the internet, because i have had classmates get into trouble over things posted on these sites.
i think this assignment got me a little more acquainted with twitter, but im not in love with it. i will continue to use the site, but i am not going to use it nearly as much as i use facebook. i think that twitter is more of a place for friends like celebrities and informal relationships than formal people in our lives. i dont think twitter is a place for family members or employees or teachers.i think that the things people like to post for their friends are not the things they want employers or family to see sometimes. i think there is a plce for twitter, but im not sure that it is entirely right for me.

Diversity Event

I went to the Teenager at Alcatraz diversity event, and i really enjoyed hearing the story that the man told.
The man was a Choctaw storyteller who traveled around the country and told his stories to people. He had done lots of research over the years and told his stories in great detail.
The story we heard was about 2 boys growing up on a Choctaw reservation and getting into some trouble. At one point the boys went to a restaurant to watch the people eat and a man came out and threw bleach on them to ruin their clothes. then they had to go back and they got in trouble for ruining the clothes that the reservation school had given them to wear to town.
Later on when the two boys grew up more they decided they would rob some stores to pay their rent. they successfully robbed a restaurant but didnt get much money. they then decided to rob a convenience store and it went horribly wrong. they ended up shooting a man and one of the boys was sentenced to a prison sentence, which he served at Alcatraz. He eventually tried to escape the prison and was told to kill one of the guards, but he couldnt do it. he was caught trying to escape but was let go because he had let the guard live.
the story really showed me how the life of the Choctaws is different from my own, and that people can really change for the better in prison.

Blog 2

Its hard for me to choose exactly when in my life i was my best, I guess because i try to be at my best everyday. For that reason I think I am at my best right now, at Iowa State. I have made many changes from my life in high school to now, and I think they show a growth in me and a success as I have made it to college.
In the beginning of high school, I was a bit of a loudmouth, always spoke my mind, and was very comedic in class and in other situations in which I shouldn't have been.
I would begin to quiet down and become more mature through my junior and senior years, accepting more responsibilities, and focusing more on my schoolwork. I kept my grades high throughout high school despite taking on these extra responsibilities. That hard work my junior and senior years really led to my receiving many scholarships to come to school here.
My hard work in high school leading to my coming here to college has really been me at my finest, and has continued as i have begun to work on my studies here at Iowa State. I really think I have been at my finest for along time now, and am only getting better everyday.

Hixson Blog 1

I thought the article was pretty funny, as well as enlightening. It seemed to kind of poke fun at our generation's ignorance of important cultural events in before, and in the beginning of, our time. I think it exaggerates in some points, not giving us enough credit, but in other areas it is right on.
Some of the points i found to be inaccurate. A few of the points on the list seemed to be slightly ahead of our time, at least in my case. I never watched Buffy the vampire slayer and have never heard the song cop killer. Also i think a few of these developments have happened during our lives, and I can remember life before them. for example, I only recently bought a toothpaste tube that stood on its cap and I learned to write in cursive in school. These few points of the article i found to be a bit out of place, but for the most part the article had the right idea about this generation.
Among the accurate ideas in this article is the thought that there have always been a multitude of TV channels, as I have had satellite television, or at least cable, for as long as i can remember. Also, I had never heard of the princess Fergie until high school, but I knew of the singer long before that. I also think that this generation is much more accepting of immigration than the previous few generations. Whether this is a result of laws protecting equality, or of our having relatives who have immigrated depends on the case.
While many of the points seem to point out this generation's ignorance, I think this article can also be seen as an assessment of a generation in which the children have become more progressive. Especially in the case of the immigration issue, I think that changing opinions in the public may be good for our country, and while not all issues on the list were that serious, I think it is both important and entertaining to look at our generation as a whole by looking at articles like this one.
